Winnie Truong's larger-than-life portraits feature a drawn cast of characters displayed in all their hairy, heroic, glassy-eyed, gap-toothed glory. Executed with pencil crayon on paper, this work generates a dialogue on the beautiful and the beastly amidst contemporary concerns of the continued relevance of figurative art and portraiture, hyperrealist sculpture, and the impact of hair ornamentation.

The inspiration for the portraits is taken from magazine images. Reinventing the figure from a position of ambivalence and imagination, Truong adapts the sharp contrasts and vivid colouring of the printed source. By planting her characters onto the page stripped of their mise en scène details, exaggerated hair replaces the narrative authority of pose, dress and environment.

Winnie Truong lives and works in Toronto, and is a recent graduate of the Ontario College of Art & Design's drawing and painting program. Producing large-scale, labour-intensive drawings and using only pencil crayon and chalk pastel on paper, her portraits exploit the drawn line to manipulate hair, flesh and blemish, exploring notions of beauty and discomfort. Winnie is the recipient of numerous awards, including this year's W.O. Forsythe award and the 401 Richmond Career Launcher prize.

It's always a bit apprehensiveness-inducing to see strong work from someone barely out of their teens; after all, A+ report cards don't always translate into a stable, self-sustaining adult art practice. Nonetheless, the prospects for recent OCAD grad Winnie Truong do seem promising. Born in 1988, Truong creates remarkable large-scale drawings where portrait-sitters' hair -- that shiny, typically inanimate add-on -- becomes an active character, growing into nooses, cysts, balloons, teeth (!) and more. It's nightmarish, Freudian-flavoured fun, with Truong's terrifically drafted pencil-crayon lines becoming much like the strands of hair they depict -- winding around, fixing and trapping their subjects. While some of Truong's drawings (like the one with hair growing out of a model-beautiful boy's mouth) are moderately gag-inducing, the overall effect is surprisingly seductive, a mash-up of gorgeousness and revulsion. I'll never watch a Clairol commercial quite the same way again. "

1 ) This is kind of late, but here are images from Free Drawings, a quarterly newspaper featuring free drawings (!) published in Toronto. Free Drawings 7 still exists here and there if you are in the city. Cop a copy. See if you can spot my drawings...

2 ) I was invited to make art for the upcoming Disposable Art Show, where artists were given skateboard decks to do their business with. It's happening at 52 McCaul on May 8th, also coinciding with the OCAD Grad exhibition just up the street. I will sneak an in progress shot in here later on. Last week Darren and I attended the Art of the Barrel launch event at the Drabinsky Gallery where schmoozing and ideas-talking took place. Kudos to the organizers for an amazing cheese/fancy fruits/nuts/crackers table. I wish I took a photograph of the arrangement; it looked like a cornucopia fell from heaven exploded. I don't know what I find more satisfying, art talk or gorging myself on an unlimited supply of night cheese. Here are in-progress studio shots of our materials. Our main focus now is cold forming the steel rings for our acorn-urn before the welding happens. It's going to be a challenge!

I'll have three pieces (this post included) up for the OCAD annual Figure Show in the Great Hall exhibition (2nd floor from the front entrance) taking place February 8–19. Come check it out if you're in the area. It's a juried exhibition, a kind of ocular buffet, if you take in too much you might throw up (just a warning for the weak).

I've been incredibly busy this month. Thankfully now that I've found earth II and defeated the cylons, I'm pleased to say my productivity is going to peak in the coming weeks. I'm collaborating with Darren on a project for Casey House. We are one of the 12 artists/teams with proposals selected for Art of the Barrel and were given an oak wine barrel to transform into a work of art. More to come!

Also, I'm off to New York on Wednesday. My entire itinerary consists of planting myself outside 30 Rock with the vague hope that Tina Fey will find, adopt, and raise me as her own. Will real life and NBC primetime thursdays ever collide? Tune in next week...

Sometimes I will make things with one idea in mind, but think about what they remind me of later. This is an exercise I am developing in order to reveal the latent-somethings about myself.

This is one of the drawings I worked on for my advanced drawing class with Luke Painter. It's definitely one of my favourite to date. Now that the boring writing parts are over with Thesis, I can explode (productively).

The best thing about life now is that I'm going to make this awesome looking butternut squash soupies. Maybe this afternoon I'll go look at Christmas decorations at the mall and hum to Christmas music. Best day!

I'm an episode of Hoarders waiting to happen. Every time I come across something so breathtakingly beautiful I have to pause, shed a single tear, and reach for my wallet. I just came home from a bangin' saturday night of looking at stuff on the internet with friends. NOT FUN: Lookbook.nu confirming all my insecurities by making me feel ashamed about a being a poorly dressed (& emphatically poor) twenty something north american nobody earning no paycheques in the creative profession(s) -as any self proclaimed interweb certified "something-ista" or otherwise.

FUN: those feelings of inferiority are easily squashed when you remember the rare and glorious diamond out there by the name of Ratemyboobs.org proving that democracy not only exists, but entertains.

On the subject of things that makes me happy:

My bad-taste/fellow bric-a-brac appreciator Melissa gave me this Pair from the belly of her italian aunt's reject surplus of religious ephemera. I cant figure out how they light up, so if you have any ideas please enLIGHTen me for this is truly an urgent matter.

I also found this outside the secretive Koreans only Kareoke fun bar on Isabella and Yonge some weeks ago. Also Italian, like all things amazing (1 half of Darren Rigo included).
